The 2012 UK arena tour, staged to celebrate forty years since the London premiere of the work, directed by Laurence Connor. It opened on 21 September 2012 at London's O2 Arena and went on to Glasgow, Newcastle, Manchester, Cardiff, Birmingham, Belfast, Dublin, Liverpool, Nottingham and Sheffield, with an extra show at Wembley Arena on 17 October.

Jesus was chosen by public vote on the ITV contest "Superstar", with Andrew Lloyd Webber, Melanie C, Jason Donovan and Dawn French on the panel; Ben Forster, from Sunderland, won the final on 25 July 2012. He was joined by Tim Minchin (Judas), Melanie C (Mary Magdalene), Alexander Hanson (Pilate), Chris Moyles (Herod, in his stage debut), Pete Gallagher (Caiaphas), Gerard Bentall (Annas), Giovanni Spano (Simon) and Michael Pickering (Peter), with contest finalists Jeff Anderson and Tim Prottey-Jones in the ensemble. The press was split: The Guardian attacked the arena format while praising Hanson and Moyles, and the Manchester Evening News was full of praise for Forster. Forster himself told Glamour that the Wembley show was the one that marked him most.

The tour was released on DVD and Blu-ray ("Jesus Christ Superstar: Live Arena Tour", 105 minutes) on 19 November 2012, and screened in US cinemas on 29 October and 1 November. The show was filmed on 4 and 5 October 2012 at the National Indoor Arena in Birmingham. No official audio album of this tour was released: according to Jay's Collection, the complete audio in circulation is a rip of the official DVD/Blu-ray audio; the only official audio released separately was Melanie C's single «I Don't Know How To Love Him». My copy is in mp3 and I still do not know exactly where it comes from.
